About Dr. Liebler

Dr. Carolyn Liebler is the Executive Director and Founder of Pika Insights, a consulting firm that supports Native American Tribal Leaders through expert demographic analysis and population projections.
Dr. Liebler grew up in the Colorado Rockies and has ancestral ties to the Black Forest of Germany and the Scottish Highlands. Her work with Native people grew out of her interest in being a good sister to her adopted brother, a Native (Ojibwe) man taken from his birth family during the Sixties Scoop.
Dr. Liebler holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Statistics from Rice University (1993) and a Master’s and PhD degrees in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996, 2001). Her career includes two decades of academic work at the University of Minnesota's Department of Sociology and the Minnesota Population Center.
Dr. Liebler founded Pika Insights to work more closely with tribal nations, supporting their efforts to protect tribal and data sovereignty. Her work has impacted Native communities, including as a demographic expert witness for a Navajo Nation water rights litigation. She collaborates on the Child Removal Study with the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition and First Nations Repatriation Institute, which draws on testimony from over 1,000 Native people impacted by child removal policies.
Through Pika Insights, Dr. Liebler continues to use her expertise to uplift and empower tribal leaders as they shape their futures with knowledge, strategy, and data-driven insights.
Why Pika Insights?

"Pika Insights" reflects a personal connection and a symbolic meaning. The Colorado Rockies are home to pikas — small tundra-dwelling animals known for their resourcefulness and persistence. Also, a pica is a unit of measurement often used in typesetting, symbolizing attention to fine detail. At Pika Insights, we aim to exemplify these qualities in our work.
